Context and format
- Wartime Switzerland treated sport as part of morale, leading to organizational changes.
- In 1943, a league reform in Lugano doubled club membership to 28 for 1944–45 and created two top divisions: Nationalliga A and Nationalliga B. The 1. Liga became the third tier and expanded to three groups of 10.
- Both NLA and NLB used a double round-robin format; a win gave 2 points, a draw 1 point.
- NLA consisted of the top 13 teams from the previous season plus AC Bellinzona, the 1. Liga champion.
- NLB consisted of the relegated team from NLA and the 13 best teams from the 1. Liga; the top two teams were promoted to the next season’s NLA, and the bottom two were relegated to the 1. Liga.
