List of Queensland Government departments
There are 21 Queensland Government departments. Each department handles a portfolio of laws and policies. Each portfolio is led by a minister, a senior member of the governing party in the state’s Legislative Assembly. The minister is appointed by the governor on behalf of the monarch, but on the premier’s recommendation. Each department is led by a director-general or commissioner who reports to the minister. The minister sets policy and priorities; the director-general or commissioner runs the department day-to-day and is employed under the Public Sector Act 2022. Besides departments, there are government-owned corporations such as the Queensland Treasury Corporation and Energy Queensland. In November 2024, the Crisafulli ministry carried out machinery of government changes, dissolving the former Department of Energy and Climate and reshaping the other departments. Most portfolios are delivered through a department plus supporting agencies, authorities, or commissions with varying levels of independence.
