Mahou San Miguel Group
Mahou San Miguel is Spain’s leading beer producer. It started in Madrid in 1890 as Hijos de Casimiro Mahou and began making Mahou beer in 1891. Over the years it grew into a major national brewer and expanded internationally.
History at a glance
- 1890: Founded in Madrid by the Mahou family.
- 1953: Manila Agreement with San Miguel Corporation gave branding rights for San Miguel in Spain; Hijos de Casimiro Mahou later became Mahou, S.A.
- 1962: San Miguel beer began exporting; Mahou opened a second brewery in Málaga in 1966.
- 1979–1992: Danone took a stake in Mahou; San Miguel brand expansion continued; Mahou opened new facilities and advertised on TV.
- 2000: Mahou bought 70% of San Miguel from Danone, making Mahou a Spanish-owned, joint Spanish group. The company was renamed Grupo Mahou-San Miguel.
- 2014: The company shortened its name to Mahou San Miguel. It bought 100% of India’s Arian Breweries & Distilleries and began collaborating with San Miguel to grow the brand globally. It also bought a 30% stake in Founders Brewing in Michigan.
- 2017–2019: Mahou bought 30% of Avery Brewing in Colorado; in 2019 it increased that stake to 70%. Also in 2019, Mahou bought a majority stake in Founders Brewing, taking 90% ownership (founders hold 10%).
