1901–02 FA Cup
The 1901–02 FA Cup was the 31st edition of England’s oldest football competition. Sheffield United won the cup for the second time, beating Southampton 2–1 in the final replay at Crystal Palace after the first final match finished 1–1.
In the final, Alf Common gave Sheffield United the first-leg equalizer in the 1–1 draw, while Harry Wood scored for Southampton. In the replay at Crystal Palace, Sheffield United’s George Hedley and Billy Barnes found the net, and Albert Brown scored for Southampton to make it 2–1.
The tournament featured a series of rounds starting with preliminary and qualifying rounds, then an intermediate round, three proper rounds, and the semi-finals before the final. If matches were tied after 90 minutes, they went to replays, with extra time used in replays if needed. Several teams received byes into later rounds, and New Brighton Tower withdrew, causing a walkover in their matchup. New entrants to the competition proper included Bishop Auckland, Northampton Town and Oxford City for the first time. The semi-finals included a draw between Sheffield United and Derby County that required two replays before United advanced to the final.
