The 1806 Rhode Island gubernatorial election was held on April 2, 1806. Federalist Richard Jackson Jr. ran against incumbent Democratic-Republican Henry Smith and Democratic-Republican Peleg Arnold. Jackson received 1,662 votes (43.07%), Smith 1,097 (28.43%), and Arnold 1,094 (28.35%). Because no candidate won a majority, the decision went to the Rhode Island General Assembly. The legislature could not elect a governor, so Isaac Wilbour, the Democratic-Republican lieutenant governor-elect, served as acting governor for the remainder of the term. Wilbour was sworn in as the acting sixth governor on May 7, 1806, keeping the office in Democratic-Republican hands.
