1802 in the United States
1802 was a year in which the United States continued to grow under President Thomas Jefferson. One important event was the founding of the United States Military Academy at West Point, created to train army officers. The country kept moving west, which brought government attention to relations with Native American tribes and to how the new lands would be governed. These developments helped set the stage for major land deals with France, including the Louisiana Purchase negotiations that would follow soon after.
