Ñeembucú is a mostly rural department in the southern part of Paraguay’s Eastern Region. Its capital and largest city is Pilar. The area covers about 12,147 square kilometers and has around 76,700 people (2022). The land is very flat, with wide grassy plains, wetlands, and patches of dense trees called montes that provide shade to grazing cattle. Most land is used for grazing or farming. It borders Argentina to the west and south (across the Paraguay and Paraná rivers) and Paraguay’s Central department to the north, with Paraguarí and Misiones to the east. The department has 16 districts. Ñeembucú is home to some of Paraguay’s oldest Jesuit ruins near Humaitá. It was also the site of important battles in the War of the Triple Alliance, including Tuyutí, Curupaytí, Boquerón del Sauce, and Humaitá.
