1991 was a turning point for Estonia. After decades under Soviet rule, Estonia moved toward independence. On August 20, 1991, the Estonian government declared that Estonia was independent again, breaking from the Soviet Union. The move followed the Soviet collapse in Moscow and the Baltic states’ push for freedom. In the months that followed, Estonia began rebuilding its own government, laws, and economy, and started planning its own currency, the kroon, which would come in 1992. Estonia also worked to gain international recognition as an independent state. The year marked the start of Estonia’s modern, independent era.
