He grew up in Hohenbocka, East Germany. He started playing football at six with FSV Glückauf Brieske-Senftenberg and, at 15, joined Energie Cottbus’s youth academy. He made his professional debut in the 2. Bundesliga with Energie Cottbus in the 2004–05 season and helped the team win promotion to the Bundesliga the next year. Schuppan then joined Dynamo Dresden in the 3. Liga for the 2010–11 season and helped them reach the 2. Bundesliga. After Dresden were relegated in 2014, he moved to Arminia Bielefeld in the third division, and in his first season there they were promoted to the 2. Bundesliga.

In 2017 he joined Würzburger Kickers. He became captain in 2018–19 and extended his contract to 2020. With Würzburg he achieved promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in the 2019–20 season, sealing it with a stoppage-time penalty in the final game. After this promotion, Schuppan retired from playing and became the sporting director of Würzburger Kickers on 17 November 2020. He was also appointed head coach for the remainder of the 2020–21 season.
