Battle of Beledweyne (2011)

During December 2011, Ethiopian forces and the Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG) recaptured the central town of Beledweyne in the Hiraan region from Al-Shabaab. The operation culminated on December 31, 2011, with an Ethiopian-TFG victory and Beledweyne coming under their control.

About 3,000 Ethiopian troops took part in the assault. Al-Shabaab and its foreign fighters reportedly fought back and claimed to repulse three Ethiopian attacks before making a tactical withdrawal. In the end, Beledweyne was seized with relatively little resistance.

Casualties were reported to be around 20 people on both sides combined. Eyewitnesses said heavy artillery and other weapons were used by both sides. Residents feared that Al-Shabaab might return to fight for the town.
