Zhang Jun (ambassador)
Zhang Jun (张军), born August 15, 1960, in Changchun, China, is a Chinese diplomat who has been the 4th Secretary General of the Boao Forum for Asia since April 2024. He was China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from July 2019 to March 2024 and previously served as Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2019.
During his time at the United Nations, Zhang served as President of the UN Security Council in four months across 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023, in the council’s rotating order. Earlier in his career, he was China’s Ambassador to the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) from 2007 to 2012.
Zhang studied law at Jilin University (LLB) and earned a Master of Laws in international law from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom. In August 2022, he warned that Nancy Pelosi should not visit Taiwan, calling the trip provocative and saying China would take firm measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He was named to the 14th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in January 2023, representing the Friendship with Foreign Countries sector. He stepped down as UN Permanent Representative on March 31, 2024, and became Boao Forum for Asia Secretary General on April 30, 2024.
