Zahra Bahrami
Zahra Bahrami (also spelled Sahra Baahrami) was born on 25 January 1965 in Tehran, Iran. She later became a Dutch citizen while keeping Iranian citizenship, and she worked as a belly dancer with a second home in London. In December 2009 she traveled from the Netherlands to Iran and joined the Ashura protests after the presidential election. She was arrested in Tehran and charged with national security offenses and drug trafficking after authorities said they found cocaine, opium, and forged passports at her home. She was sentenced to death and executed by hanging on 29 January 2011 at Evin Prison in Tehran. The Netherlands protested the execution, briefly freezing diplomatic contacts before resuming on 18 February 2011. Bahrami’s case drew international attention and controversy over the charges and the legal process.
