Yugawa (湯川村, Yugawa-mura) is a small village in Fukushima Prefecture, in Japan’s Tōhoku region. It sits in the northern part of the Aizu area, in the center of the Aizu Basin.

As of February 2020, about 3,051 people lived in Yugawa, in 924 households. The village covers 16.37 square kilometers, giving a population density of around 190 people per square kilometer.

Climate is humid continental, with warm summers and cold winters with heavy snowfall. The average yearly temperature is about 11.9°C, and yearly rainfall is around 1,383 mm. August is usually the warmest month and January the coldest.

History: The area was once part of Mutsu Province. In the Heian period, the Shōjō-ji temple was founded here. In the Edo period, it was part of the Aizu Domain. After the Meiji Restoration, it became part of Kawanuma District. The villages of Oikawa and Shōjō merged to form Yugawa on March 31, 1957.

Economy: Rice farming is the main industry, with many paddy fields. Asparagus is also an important crop.

Education: Yugawa has two public elementary schools and one public junior high school. There is no high school in the village.

Transport: The Ban’etsu West Line of JR East serves the area.

Symbols: The village tree is the cherry blossom, the flower is the chrysanthemum, and the bird is the common cuckoo.
