Rocky Rodríguez
Rocky Rodríguez, full name Raquel Rodríguez Cedeño, is a Costa Rican soccer player who acts as an attacking midfielder for Kansas City Current in the NWSL and for the Costa Rica national team. Born on October 28, 1993, in San José, Costa Rica, she grew up with a footballing family—her father, Sivianni Rodríguez, played professionally and for the Costa Rica national team.
Rodríguez began playing soccer at age four and later joined Deportivo Saprissa’s women’s team. She moved to the United States to pursue opportunities in women’s soccer and played college soccer at Penn State from 2012 to 2015. She helped the Nittany Lions win the 2015 NCAA Championship and earned major individual honors that year, including the Hermann Trophy and Honda Sports Award.
In 2016 she was drafted second overall by Sky Blue FC in the NWSL College Draft and was named the league’s Rookie of the Year. In 2017 she scored the fastest goal in NWSL history (24 seconds) in a match against Portland Thorns FC. She spent the 2017–2018 season on loan with Perth Glory in Australia, becoming the first Central American player in the W-League.
In 2020 Rodríguez joined Portland Thorns FC and won the NWSL Championship with them in 2022. In January 2024 Angel City FC acquired her from Portland; later that year she moved to Kansas City Current in December 2024 for intra-league funds.
Internationally, Rodríguez has represented Costa Rica since 2008 at the U-17, U-20, and senior levels. She scored Costa Rica’s first-ever Women’s World Cup goal in 2015 against Spain and has participated in multiple World Cup qualifying campaigns and the CONCACAF W Gold Cup.
