Young's Jersey Dairy
Young's Jersey Dairy is a family-owned dairy farm and restaurant in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The Young family started the farm in 1869 and built the famous red barn. They temporarily sold the farm during the Great Depression but bought it back after World War II, and the Young's Jersey Dairy company began in 1946. They started selling milk in the 1950s, added cheese and simple foods in the 1960s, and began making ice cream in 1981, which is what they’re best known for today.
Today the farm offers more than dairy: a petting zoo, batting cages, and miniature golf, plus seasonal activities like a corn maze, pumpkin picking, wagon rides in fall, and Christmas tree cutting in winter. They produce about 75,000 gallons of ice cream and 44,000 pounds of cheese each year, with about half of the cheese sold as cheese curds. The herd includes around 50 Jersey cows; the milk is used for cheese, while the ice cream milk is purchased from Reiter Dairy. The property also has a black walnut plantation and a large pine Christmas-tree plantation. In summer they employ roughly 320 workers. By 2009, more than a million visitors came each year, and the business has been recognized as a top local attraction and for kid-friendly fun. In 2018, Ohio Magazine voters chose Young's Jersey Dairy as the best ice cream in Ohio.
