Wrath of the Tyrant
Wrath of the Tyrant is the first demo album by the Norwegian black metal band Emperor. It was recorded in early May 1992 and self-released soon after. The original demo cover showed a chimera.
In 1994, Wild Rag Records reissued Wrath of the Tyrant with two bonus tracks and new artwork. That version’s cover features Tchort, who hadn’t joined the band until 1993.
Head Not Found Records released a limited 12" vinyl edition in 1995, featuring a photograph of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh on the cover.
In 1998, the demo was remastered and issued together with tracks from the Emperor EP. There were two versions: Candlelight Records used the Emperor EP cover and included live video footage; Century Black used a different cover and did not include the video.
Most songs from Wrath of the Tyrant were later re-recorded. "Wrath of the Tyrant" and "Night of the Graveless Souls" were re-recorded in December 1992 for the Emperor EP. "Ancient Queen", "Witches Sabbath" and "Lord of the Storms" were re-recorded in the same session and released on As the Shadows Rise. "My Empire's Doom" was re-recorded as "Beyond the Great Vast Forest" on In the Nightside Eclipse. "Moon over Kara-Shehr" was re-recorded with Hellhammer on drums and released on the Nordic Metal tribute to Euronymous in 1995.
All lyrics were written by Mortiis; music was composed by Samot and Ygg.
