World Cup of Crisps is a UK Twitter poll created by TV host Richard Osman to find the nation’s favourite crisp and flavour. It started in 2012 and is held about every four years.

In 2012, 32 crisps competed. They were put into groups, with group winners moving to the knockout rounds. People voted on Twitter using the hashtag #wcocr. Frazzles won the first edition.

The 2016 edition expanded to 48 crisps and used more group stages before knockouts. Votes were tallied with Twitter polls, and more than a million votes were cast during the semi-finals. The 24 remaining crisps were re-drawn into six groups of four, then into four groups of three for the semi-finals. A 10-minute tiebreak poll decided a Group 1 result between Walkers Smoky Bacon and Taytos Cheese & Onion, with Walkers winning 51% to 49%.

During and after the second edition, some voters questioned whether all entrants fit the idea of a “crisp,” since Wotsits, Monster Munch and Quavers were included. Osman invited those doubting the winner to organise their own World Cup.

The 2016 winner was Monster Munch Pickled Onion, earning its first title. Frazzles had won the first edition in 2012, also earning its first title.
