Windows Open Simultaneously 1st Part, 3rd Motif
Windows Open Simultaneously 1st Part, 3rd Motif (French: Fenêtres ouvertes simultanément Ière partie 3e motif) is an oil-on-canvas painting by French artist Robert Delaunay, created in 1912. It is part of the Windows paintings series. The work measures 57 cm by 123 cm (22 in by 48 in) and is housed at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, accession 76.2553.36. A painting with the same title is held at Tate Modern in London. By this time, Delaunay had left direct representation, though subtle hints of the Eiffel Tower appear in green at the center. Influenced by analytic cubism in its geometric forms, the work is defined by diaphanous and prismatic colors. In 1913 Delaunay explained: “Line is limitation. Color gives depth—not perspectival, not successive, but simultaneous depth—as well as form and movement.”
