White Noise is the fifth studio album by Australian punk rock band The Living End, released in Australia on 19 July 2008. It was the band’s first album on the Dew Process label. The record was produced by John Agnello and recorded in April 2008 at Water Music Studios in Hoboken, New Jersey. The music blends punk rock and alternative rock and runs 44 minutes and 26 seconds.

Singles from the album include “White Noise” (5 July 2008), “Moment in the Sun” (25 October 2008), and “Raise the Alarm” (radio release on 22 December 2008). The album debuted at number 2 on the Australian charts and earned Gold status in its first week. It won Best Rock Album at the 2008 ARIA Awards and was also nominated for Best Rock Album and Album of the Year.

Background: After a late-2006 hiatus due to lead singer Chris Cheney’s fatigue, Cheney took time off to rest and find inspiration. He wrote the riff for the opening track “How Do We Know?” and the band decided to write more songs in that direction. In early 2008 they toured Victoria under the alias The Longnecks to road-test new material. Pre-production took place in Melbourne with Kalju Tonuma, with some co-writes including “Sum of Us.” The album was later produced by John Agnello, with Brendan O’Brien handling mixing and mastering. It was recorded in New Jersey in April 2008. A teaser track, “How Do We Know,” appeared on Triple J on 23 May 2008, and a “White Noise Gizmo” promotion offered two tracks a day online from 14–18 July. All songs were written by Chris Cheney, and the album features tracks recorded live at ACDC Lane, Melbourne.
