White Night (novel)
White Night
White Night is the ninth novel in Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files, starring wizard-detective Harry Dresden. Published in 2007, it continues the Chicago-set urban fantasy adventures.
Plot in brief
- A year after the events of Proven Guilty, Dresden is called to a suspicious suicide that he suspects involved magic. Soon, he learns a serial killer is targeting magical practitioners in Chicago.
- He teams up with other practicing magicians, including Elaine, Dresden’s former lover, and learns that Thomas Dresden has been quietly helping women with magical talent escape the city.
- The killer appears to be a group of vampires who feed on despair, with connections to a powerful vampire line called the Skavis and to "Grey Cloak" (Vittorio Malvora) and Madrigal Raith. Cowl, a dangerous warlock who survived the Darkhallow, is also involved.
- A string of deaths leads Dresden to Undertown, a hidden part of Chicago, and to a confrontation at the Raith estate during a White Court conclave. There, he and his allies face a deadly duel against Madrigal and Vittorio to enforce the Unseelie Accords.
- The battle escalates when Cowl opens a Nevernever gate, bringing in an army of ghouls. Dresden and his friends fight back, opening another gate to escape while Madrigal and Vittorio unleash their powers.
- Inside a time-bubble created by the conflict, Dresden confronts Lash, a demonic presence bound to him by Lasciel’s coin. Dresden refuses to use the coin to win and Lash sacrifices herself to protect his mind, allowing Dresden to break Vittorio’s spell.
- The cavern where the battle unfolds collapses. Dresden, Lara Raith, and others narrowly escape in a fiery escape managed by Thomas, Murphy, Marcone, and their allies. Lara’s involvement in the killings is uncovered, leading to restitution and a promise to prevent future harm.
- In the aftermath, Dresden urges Elaine to build a safety net for practitioners. Marcone gains status as a freeholding baron under the Unseelie Accords. Dresden returns Lasciel’s sigil coin to Father Forthill after discovering that the scar on his palm is fading.
- Thomas is revealed to be working as a hairstylist who feeds on emotions from his female clients, and Justine is secretly feeding him information about the war from inside House Raith.
Overall, White Night blends magical crime investigation with high-stakes battle, political intrigue among vampire courts, and a personal test of Dresden’s will and mind.
