Wedding dress of Sarah Ferguson
Sarah Ferguson wore an ivory duchesse satin wedding dress with heavy beading for her 1986 wedding to Prince Andrew at Westminster Abbey. Designed by Lindka Cierach, the beadwork included hearts for romance, anchors and waves for Andrew's sailing life, and bumblebees and thistles from Ferguson's family heraldry. The dress had a 17-foot (5.2 m) long train with intertwined A and S in silver beads. Copies of the dress—featuring the royal motifs—went on sale just hours after the wedding. The look was inspired by Princess Diana's gown, and the outfit was completed with a headdress and a bouquet of fabric rosettes or artificial flowers. The bouquet was by Jane Packer; hair and makeup were by Denise McAdam and Teresa Fairminer. Ferguson later said in her 1997 memoir My Story that she had lost 26 pounds to fit into the dress and called it an exquisite creation, praising Cierach as a genius and noting the gown was boned like a corset. The ivory silk dress became the season's most sought-after style.
