Television in Peru

Peru has a long history with television, dating back more than 60 years. Today there are about 105 television broadcasters in the country, with 22 based in the capital, Lima. In 2003, around 5.47 million television receivers were in use, which is roughly 200 televisions for every 1,000 people. By 2011, cable TV subscriptions reached about 967,943.

History

The first experimental television transmission in Peru occurred on September 21, 1939, showing a film and an artistic program from the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe school in Lima. A second test was conducted by Antonio Pereyra from the Bolivar Hotel on May 28, 1954. On January 17, 1958, the Ministry of Education and UNESCO inaugurated the State Channel 7 and carried out a test broadcast.

Digital television

Peru began its digital television transition in 2010. TV Peru was the first station to start broadcasting digitally, beginning on March 30, 2010. The country has continued moving forward with the digital transition since then.
