Water Polo Federation of Ukraine
The Water Polo Federation of Ukraine (FVPU) is the public body that develops water polo in Ukraine. It organizes official competitions and is a member of FINA and LEN. It works with the National Olympic Committee and other sports organizations. The Federation’s Charter was updated on March 13, 2020. It was registered by Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice on July 8, 2005. Since June 17, 2021, the president has been Oleksandr Svishchov, who also leads Dynamo Lviv; former head Oleksandr Kucherenko is the honorary president.
Water polo has a long history in Ukraine, over 100 years. Early centers included Kharkiv and Lviv. After World War II, the main centers were Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Sevastopol, and Uzhhorod. Ukrainian clubs won medals in the USSR championships, and Kyiv’s Dynamo had notable success in the 1970s. In 1992 Ukraine started its own championships, and the federation began operating as a formal body (it had no legal registration until 2005). On November 28, 2021, the Ukrainian national team won the League of Nations in the Czech Republic for the first time.
