Walnut Whip
Walnut Whip is a milk chocolate cone filled with whipped vanilla fondant and topped with a single walnut. It was launched in 1910 by Duncan’s of Edinburgh and is Nestlé Rowntree’s oldest surviving brand.
Originally, the top used half-walnuts (often broken pieces). It later had a whole walnut on top, and at one point the walnut inside was removed so there was one walnut on the outside.
The treats are made in Halifax, West Yorkshire, using millions of walnuts each week (mostly imported). Nestlé says almost one Walnut Whip is eaten every two seconds in the UK.
The product was handmade at Duncan’s Beaverhall Road factory. In the late 1970s, production moved to hollow-moulded machines, changing the look of the chocolate surface (the current surface is mainly decorative).
In 2017 Nestlé released a version with no walnuts and renamed it the Whip. By 2020, Mint and Caramel versions were also available, and Nestlé has added more variants like Delicate Vanilla, Delicious Caramel and Delightful Mint.
The original Walnut Whip is still sold in many shops, including Spar and Nisa. The classic flavour is vanilla, though past variants included coffee and maple.
