Vrindavan is a historic city in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India, in the Braj Bhoomi region. It is sacred to Hindus because many believe Krishna spent his childhood here. Today, Vrindavan is home to about 5,500 temples dedicated to Krishna and his consort Radha, making it one of the most important places for Vaishnavism.

The city is part of the Krishna pilgrimage circuit, along with Mathura, Barsana, Gokul, Govardhan, and other holy sites such as Kurukshetra, Dwarka, and Puri. The name Vrindavan comes from its groves of holy basil (vrindā) and the word vana (grove or forest).

Vrindavan has a long history. Its spiritual importance was revived in the 16th century by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Earlier, the saint Vallabha Charya influenced devotional practices here. In modern times, the town saw urban growth that reduced its remaining forests and wildlife.

The city sits on the Yamuna River’s west bank, about 15 kilometers north of Mathura and around 125 kilometers from Delhi. It sits at an elevation of about 170 meters and has a hot, semi-arid climate.

As of the 2011 census, Vrindavan had a population of around 63,000 people. The area is culturally part of Braj, where Radha and Krishna are central figures, and visitors from all over the world come for festivals and temple visits. Vrindavan is also known as the “city of widows” because many widows move there to live in ashrams; estimates suggest 15,000 to 20,000 widows live in and around the town. Organizations work to support these women and children.

Vrindavan’s cuisine is famous in the Braj region, with specialties like Vrindavan Peda, Dahi Arbi Jhor, Khichdi, Bedmi puri, and other local dishes.

The town is connected by national highways, with Delhi about 129 kilometers away, Gurgaon 117 kilometers, Agra 54 kilometers, and Mathura 9 kilometers. The Yamuna is the nearby river, and within the city, e-rickshaws are common for getting around. The nearest airports are in Agra (about 71 kilometers) and Delhi (about 150 kilometers), with a new Noida International Airport planned to open in the near future.
