Avon Products
Avon Products, Inc. is a cosmetics company that sells makeup, skin care, perfume, and personal care items through a global network of independent sales representatives. It began in 1886 in New York as the California Perfume Company and was renamed Avon in 1939. The company moved its headquarters to London in 2016 and now operates in more than 100 countries. It uses door‑to‑door sales and catalogs, with about 6 million representatives worldwide who earn income from their sales and from recruiting others.
In 2020 Avon posted about $9.1 billion in global sales, making it one of the world’s largest beauty brands and the second-largest multi‑level marketing company after Amway. Major ownership changes followed: Natura &Co, a Brazilian beauty group, bought Avon in 2020, making Avon part of Natura Holding S.A. In 2025, Avon agreed to be sold to Regent LP for £1, with Latin America and Russia remaining with Natura. Avon’s North American business was sold to LG Household & Health Care in 2019.
Avon has faced legal and ethical issues, including a 2014 $135 million settlement related to a bribery investigation. It has also shifted its approach to animal testing, stopping all regulatory-required testing globally in 2019. The company has closed or scaled back operations in some markets (France in 2013; Australia and New Zealand in 2018) but remains active in many countries, including Russia.
