Vaman Viswanath Kumar, commonly known as V. V. Kumar, was born on 22 June 1935 in Madras (now Chennai), British India. He was a right-handed batsman and a leg-spin bowler.

He played for India in two Test matches in 1961. On his debut against Pakistan in Delhi, he took five wickets in the first innings. His international career was brief, with the 1961 series being his only time playing for India.

Kumar had a long domestic career for Madras, which later became Tamil Nadu, from 1955-56 to 1976-77. In first-class cricket, he appeared in 129 matches and took 599 wickets, while contributing as a lower-order batsman.
