Valkeala is a former municipality in Finland. It was in Southern Finland and is now part of the city of Kouvola in the Kymenlaakso region. In 2003 it had about 11,238 residents and covered 1,004.40 square kilometers, of which 143.47 square kilometers were water. The population density was about 13 people per square kilometer. The area includes Lake Vekaranjärvi, near which the Karelia Brigade is based. Valkeala is known for Repovesi National Park. The official language was Finnish. In 2009, Valkeala merged with Kouvola, Kuusankoski, Elimäki, Anjalankoski and Jaala to form the new city of Kouvola, which has over 80,000 residents and is one of Finland’s larger cities.
