Uukwaluudhi
Uukwaluudhi is a traditional kingdom of the Ovambo people in northern Namibia. Its capital is Tsandi, about 30 km south of Outapi. The Uukwaluudhi Royal Homestead lies about 2 km past Tsandi toward Okahao.
Half of the homestead is a modern brick building where the king and queen live, while the other half remains in traditional Owambo style. The king now lives in a modern house, but the old residence is kept to preserve culture. In 1978, a modern section was added next to the traditional one, and the king and his family moved there to allow visitors access to the former royal home.
Guided tours start in the front yard, which serves as the reception area, and take about 1.5 hours.
Josia Shikongo Taapopi is the twelfth king of Uukwaluudhi. He was appointed by his uncle, King Mwaala, who ruled for 50 years. The royal lineage continues through the matrilineal line.
In 2018, Omagongo, a beverage made from marula fruit, was celebrated as the Cultural Festival at the Uukwaluudhi traditional authority homestead. The festival lasted 2–3 days and brought together Aawambo communities from northern Namibia. It was hosted by King Josia Shikongo Taapopi and attended by Sam Nujoma, Namibia’s founding father and first President, who is credited as the creator of the Omagongo Cultural Festival.
