Up All Night (radio show)
Up All Night is a late-night phone-in show on BBC Radio 5 Live in the United Kingdom. It usually airs from 1:00 to 5:00 am every night and is also carried on BBC local radio stations as well as Radio Scotland, Radio Wales, Radio Ulster, and Radio Foyle. The show began on 28 March 1994 and continues today, with a short hiatus from 27 March to 6 July 2020.
Originally, it was a news and current affairs program with occasional phone-ins, running three hours and later extended to four in 1998. The idea came from Rhod Sharp, who hosted Monday to Wednesday, while Dotun Adebayo hosted Friday to Sunday nights. Other presenters over the years included Richard Dallyn, Dalya Raphael and Russell Fuller. Since 2017, Thursday nights featured guest presenters.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Sharp left and the program was temporarily replaced by a BBC Radio London nightly phone-in. Adebayo moved to the weeknights. On 6 July 2020, Up All Night returned to Five Live with a revised format focused mostly on audience phone-ins; some features like the World Football Phone-In continued, but regular cross‑world news updates were reduced.
The show was originally produced in London, moving to MediaCityUK in Salford in 2012. One host, Rhod Sharp, even broadcast from Marblehead, Massachusetts for many years (2004–2020), using ISDN and later a home studio. The program has often featured a strong US focus and special broadcasts, including events like the Super Bowl. It has maintained an online presence with podcasts and social media, and notable recurring segments and guests such as the World Football Phone-In and film critic Dave Aldridge.
