University of Pennsylvania Campus Historic District

The University of Pennsylvania Campus Historic District is a group of historic buildings on the university’s campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The university moved from Center City to West Philadelphia in the 1870s, and its oldest buildings date from that period.

The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 28, 1978. At that time, it included 28 contributing properties spread over about 117 acres (47 hectares). Some properties have been documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey.

One building, the Lea Laboratory of Hygiene (also called Smith Labs), was demolished in 1995. Three properties within the district—College Hall, Furness Library, and Richards Medical Research Laboratories—are separately listed on the National Register.

St. Anthony Hall House sits next to the district and was listed on the National Register in 2005.

Architecturally, the district features Late Gothic Revival, Tudor Revival, and Romanesque styles, created by multiple architects. The area is roughly bounded by Hamilton Walk, South, 32nd, Walnut, 36th, Spruce, and 39th Streets. Coordinates are about 39.94917°N, 75.19444°W.
