UN Security Council Resolution 636, adopted on 6 July 1989, condemned Israel’s deportation of eight Palestinians from the occupied territories on 29 June 1989 and reaffirmed that the Fourth Geneva Convention protecting civilians applies there. It called on Israel to ensure the safe and immediate return of the deported people and to halt further deportations. The situation was brought to the Council by Syria and the then-President, Yugoslavia. The resolution passed 14 votes in favor, with one abstention from the United States; no votes against.
