Umeå University Library is in Umeå, Sweden. It began in 1950 as the Scientific Library of Umeå City Library. It is one of seven Swedish libraries that receive a free copy of every book printed in the country (legal deposit). The library expanded to support research and university teaching and became part of Umeå University in 1965. The main library building on the campus opened in 1968 and was last expanded in 2006. It now holds about 1.5 million volumes and serves northern Sweden. There are branch libraries at Norrland’s University Hospital and at the Umeå Arts Campus. The library has benefited from donations from scholars like Nils Ahnlund, Björn Collinder, Eli Heckscher and Sigrid Kahle, and its Archives and Special Collections include the archives of writer Sara Lidman.
