2012 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (women's race)
The 2012 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad – Women’s race was held on 25 February 2012. It was the seventh edition, starting and finishing in Ghent at St. Peter’s Square and covering 119.4 km with seven climbs in East Flanders.
Dutch rider Loes Gunnewijk (Orica–AIS) won in a sprint against Ellen van Dijk (Specialized–lululemon). Trixi Worrack (Specialized–lululemon) finished third after sprinting from the chasing group.
The race featured many attacks on the climbs, with Gunnewijk making her move around the cobbled Paddestraat. Van Dijk bridged to her, and the two raced away with teammates disrupting the chase. With about 12 km to go, they led by 1 minute 36 seconds. In the end, Gunnewijk’s late attack paid off in the sprint on the flat finish.
It was a tough day for many riders: only 36 of the 97 starters finished within the 5% time limit.
