Ultimate Challenge MMA (UCMMA) is a UK-based mixed martial arts promotion founded in 2008 by Dave O'Donnell and Tony Colasanto. Based in London, it grew after the collapse of Cage Rage, whose final show was Cage Rage 28 in 2008. O’Donnell, one of Cage Rage’s original owners, started Ultimate Challenge UK, and after promoting several events the organization shortened its name to UCMMA.

UCMMA broadcasts: in the UK on London Live, in the US on Fight Now TV, and in other countries on Viewster. In August 2011, UCMMA 22 – Warrior Creed aired on the Primetime pay-per-view channel. A deal with Fight Now TV brought UCMMA to the United States, with the contract running for a year as of February 2012. From UCMMA 26 – The Real Deal, events could be bought in high street stores like Tesco, HMV, and Argos, as well as online retailers such as Zavvi, Amazon, Lovefilm, and The Hut Group. In May 2012, UCMMA was featured on BBC One’s How To Beat Pain.

The promotion also engaged in TV and casting projects. After Sky Sports stopped showing MMA, UCMMA signed a live broadcasting deal with Primetime. Dave O’Donnell hosted Cage Fighter, a weekly show on Sky Sports, with interviews, fight clips, and event previews. UCMMA also aired kickboxing matches at events under the UK1 banner, using a format that mirrors MMA but with some rule differences.

Rules and format: UK1 fights use a 10-point-must scoring system, with three 3-minute rounds and a 1-minute rest; if a fight is a draw, an extra round is fought. A three-knockdown rule applies, and a fighter can only be saved from a count by the bell in the final round. Fighters can choose MMA gloves or standard kickboxing gloves. In clinches, fighters may throw a single knee strike before breaking. UK1 rules prohibit standing/clinching elbow strikes, ground fighting, trips, takedowns, or throws, to keep the action fast-paced and exciting.

Titles are awarded in each weight division, following the same structure as their MMA divisions.

Other ventures: Dave O’Donnell created White Collar MMA (WCMMA) to give ordinary people a chance to experience MMA in a safe, controlled setting. WCMMA targets nine-to-fivers who want to test themselves in three 90-second rounds, with amateur and semi-pro bouts to help fighters grow before turning pro.

In 2012, UCMMA launched Ultimate Ball, a team sport hybrid that mixes rugby, football, basketball, and MMA and is played inside the cage. It debuted at UCMMA 27, with teams aiming to move a rugby-shaped ball into the opposing goal, using takedowns and body shots as part of the game.

UCMMA has grown to become a prominent name in UK MMA, offering exciting fights, diverse formats, and opportunities for both professional fighters and everyday fans to engage with the sport.
