Typhoon Megi (2016)

Typhoon Megi, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Helen, was a large and powerful storm that affected Taiwan and eastern China in late September 2016. It was the seventeenth named storm and seventh typhoon of the 2016 Pacific season.

Formation and path
- Megi formed near Pohnpei in the first days of September 2016 and became a tropical storm on September 23. It strengthened into a typhoon by September 26.
- It reached peak strength with 1-minute winds of 220 km/h (140 mph) near Taiwan and a central pressure of 933 hPa.
- Megi made landfall in Taiwan’s Hualien area on September 27, then weakened as it crossed the island and moved into the Taiwan Strait.
- It made its final landfall in Fujian, China, on September 28 as a weakening storm and dissipated on September 29.

Impacts in Taiwan
- About 3.9 million households lost power.
- Roughly 14,000 people evacuated; 8 killed and 625 injured.
- More than 400 flights were canceled.
- Thousands of schools and crops were damaged; total economic losses were about NT$3.36 billion (roughly US$107 million).

Impacts in China
- At least 44 people were killed in mainland China, with many missing after landslides.
- About 120,000 people were evacuated in Fujian.
- Around 1,200 houses were destroyed and 10,000 damaged.
- About 209 million people were affected; total damages were about CNY 9.7 billion (roughly US$1.45 billion).

Overall impact
- Megi caused 52 deaths in total and about US$1.56 billion in damages.
- Route affected the Caroline Islands, Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, and eastern China.
