Jody Lloyd
Jody Lloyd is a New Zealand musician and producer from Christchurch who makes electronica and hip-hop. He is the brother of Demarnia Lloyd from Cloudboy, and they often appear on each other’s recordings.
In 1993 he formed Dark Tower with Axel Foley. They released Real Zealmen (an EP) in 1995 and Shadows on a Flat Land in 1998 on Lloyd’s own She’ll Be Right label. Shadows on a Flat Land featured guests including his father, Demarnia Lloyd, Jeremy Taylor, Mark Duff and Claire Falloon, with Mark Duff helping with production and engineering.
Dark Tower helped create a distinct New Zealand voice in hip-hop, mixing local accents with some Urban Pasifika influences. Some critics called it kitschy kiwiana for sampling old New Zealand TV themes and folk music.
Lloyd also works in electronica and remixes under the name Trillion, releasing six albums starting with Fresh Jams (2002). Other Trillion albums include this world and the sadvipra diversion (2004), The gray between Shadow and Shade (2005), Audio Agriculture in the 21st Century (2006), and SILENTinvisible (2008). He formed the six-piece Trillion Band in 2004; by 2007 it became The Incredible Braking Wheel, releasing a five-track EP.
He has produced albums for Bazuki Joe, Billy Wilson, Phil Johns, Le Mo Cafe, Catalyst Poetry Journals and Jim Christy. Lloyd founded She’ll Be Right Records, a Christchurch label focusing on music with a natural New Zealand accent, working with artists such as Mark Duff, John White (Mëstar), Andy Gibson, Ragamuffin Children, Simon Le Puffin, Phil Johns, Billy Wilson, Bazuki Joe, Jeremy Lips Taylor, Delaney Davidson, Tono, Jim Christy, Le Mot Cafe and Mark Tupuhi.
