Turtola, Tampere

Turtola is a district in Tampere, Finland. It sits in the city’s southeastern part near the Tampere Ring Road, about five kilometers from the city center. It borders Muotiala, Aakkula, Messukylä, Viiala, and Korkinmäki. The Hervanta Highway runs through Turtola. One of Tampere’s large shopping centers, K-Citymarket Turtola, is there.

History: Turtola is mentioned in the 1540 land register as part of Messukylä, which belonged to the greater Pirkkala parish. A 1465 document notes Olaff Twrdo as a representative of Messukylä. The name’s origin isn’t certain; it may come from Finnish words turtu or turta (meaning heavy-hearted) or be linked to the Swedish name Tord. In the 18th century, it became a rustholl (a type of estate) and in 1773 the area was divided into Turtola and Turtos. Messukylä parish was annexed to Tampere in 1947, and the first town plan for Turtola was approved in 1963.
