Tommy Boyle (footballer, born 1886)
Thomas William Boyle (29 January 1886 – 5 January 1940) was an English footballer who played mainly as a half back for Burnley. Born in Hoyland, Yorkshire, he began at Barnsley (1906–1912) before moving to Burnley in 1912 for a club-record fee of £1,150. He made 210 league appearances for Burnley, scoring 36 goals, and captained the team to FA Cup glory in 1914. He also led Burnley to their first league title in 1920–21. He finished his playing career with Wrexham (1923–1924).
Internationally, Boyle earned one England cap in 1913 (against Ireland) and played four times for the Football League XI. He was a coal miner before football and served as a Royal Field Artillery gunner in World War I, being wounded in 1917. After his playing days, he worked as a landlord and later spent time in a psychiatric hospital, dying in 1940 at Whittingham Hospital. He is buried in Hoyland in an unmarked grave.
