Tilhance Creek
Tilhance Creek is a 10.4-mile-long tributary of Back Creek in Berkeley County, West Virginia. It starts from a spring on the east side of Third Hill Mountain (about 2,172 feet) and flows east into a small farm lake. From there, it heads north, gathering spring-fed streams from Third Hill Mountain, then turns east near Baxter and runs along the west side of Ferrell Ridge. Whites Run and another small unnamed stream (originating near Hedgesville Church) join here. Just before WV Route 9, Higgins Run joins and Tilhance Creek forms a small island. After crossing under WV 9, it passes Johnsontown (Soho) and winds through rolling hills until it meets Back Creek near Allensville. The creek is stocked with trout by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources: once in February and every two weeks from March through May, starting near Johnsontown at the WV 9 bridge. The name Tilhance Creek was officially adopted in 1901 after having several other names.
