Thomas Fortier
Thomas Fortier (September 27, 1796 – May 21, 1876) was a doctor and politician in Canada East (now Quebec). He represented Nicolet in the Legislative Assembly from 1848 to 1858. Born in Quebec City, he was the son of Joseph Fortier and Rose Laurent and studied at the Petit Séminaire de Québec and New York University. He served as a lieutenant in the militia during the War of 1812. Fortier became a licensed physician in 1814 and practiced in Saint-Grégoire, Baie-du-Febvre and Gentilly. He married Eliza Hanna in 1819 and Léocadie Grondin in 1834. He served on the local school board, becoming its vice-president in 1845, and wrote articles for La Gazette (Trois-Rivières), Le Populaire (Montreal) and La Gazette (Quebec City). He planned to run in the 1858 election but withdrew before the vote. He died in Gentilly at the age of 79.
