There's a Light That's Burning in the Window of the Little House Upon the Hill
There's a Light That's Burning in the Window of the Little House Upon the Hill is a World War I era song released in 1915. Music was written by Joe Goodwin and Harry Puck, and the lyrics were by Ballard MacDonald. It was published for voice and piano by Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. The sheet music cover, designed by Walter M. Dunk, shows an elderly woman and her dog sitting near a white picket fence by a dirt road that leads to a house. At the bottom left there is a small inset photo that changes by version, featuring Belle Rutland, Bob Buchanan, or Ben Smith. The song is told from the point of view of a lonely soldier, who finds comfort in imagining his mother waiting for him and a light burning in their house’s window. That hopeful image helps him get through his days at war. The sheet music is associated with the Pritzker Military Museum & Library.
