Milkmaid

Milkmaids are women who work with milk and cows. They milk cows and may make dairy products like cream, butter, and cheese. A milkmaid is not the same as a milkman who delivers milk; she is the female form of a dairyman or cowman. In the 1600s to 1800s, English milkmaids sold milk while wearing a yoke with two pails and sometimes dressed up for London May Day. People noticed that milkmaids often had smooth, clear skin, unlike the scarred faces of smallpox survivors. This observation helped create the first smallpox vaccine.
