The Transition Decade
The Transition Decade is a non-partisan Australian campaign that brings together community, social and environmental groups to push for a safe climate and a sustainable future. It started in Victoria and grew to cover the whole country. Partners include Friends of the Earth, Beyond Zero Emissions, Climate Emergency Network, Sustainable Living Foundation, Transition Network, Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Yarra Climate Action Now, Darebin Climate Action Now, Climate Action Moreland, Sustainable Living Tasmania, Environment Victoria, Alternative Technology Association, and the 100% Renewable campaign. The plan spans ten years and aims to unite work across groups to influence policy and local action.
The Transition Decade was launched on 14 February 2010 at Melbourne Town Hall during the Sustainable Living Festival, with more than 1,000 people in attendance. Speakers included Rob Gell, the Governor of Victoria David De Kretser, Uncle Bob Randall, Cam Walker, Rob Adams, Will Steffen, Christine Milne, Kelly O'Shanassy, Giselle Wilkinson, Philip Sutton, and Mark Ogge.
Phases of the plan:
- 2010: Community Commitment and Activate Transition Advocates. Build a broad alliance, share tools, and gain social support for the Transition Decade goals.
- Social Mobilisation: Create mass social will with creative campaigns so many Australians back the goals and build political will for action.
- 2012: Government Commitment and Policy Reform. Change laws and policies to support new economic development and innovation.
- 2014: Intense Transition Mode and Economic Reorientation. Shift the economy to support the necessary systems and goods, and recognize that a decade isn’t long enough if we keep doing business as usual. Broad, sustained effort from all parts of society is needed until the work is done.
