The Tough Brets
The Tough Brets is the third episode of Season 2 of Flight of the Conchords. It originally aired on February 1, 2009. In the episode, Bret and Jemaine perform at a local library, where Bret casually disses every rapper that comes to mind. Murray scolds them for making too much noise and for their rap diss, and they sing a new song about “Hurt Feelings.” Dave warns them that American rappers hold grudges and seek revenge, which makes Bret worry enough to start a small protection gang.
Bret forms a makeshift crew including Johnny Boy, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, and Dave, hoping to guard against rapper retaliation. Murray is harassed by Australian men at the Australian consulate, while Bret and the gang plan guard schedules. A confrontation occurs when Bret is taunted by Mel, who has painted a terrible portrait of Jemaine. At a function at the Australian consulate, the taunting continues, and the group launches into another performance of “Hurt Feelings.” There are chases, a West Side Story–style dance-off, and more trouble as the gang confronts their opponents. Johnny quits after discovering his old hideout is gone, and Dave ends up in the hospital after an incident, leading him to quit too. By the end, Murray remains as the sole member of the group, and the episode closes with Mel and Jemaine showing off the infamous painting.
Songs featured in the episode include:
- An opening rap at the library where Bret and Jemaine name famous rappers and declare most of them “not very good,” with Rhymenoceros as a standout.
- “Hurt Feelings,” which has a music video featuring Bret and Jemaine dressed as Mozart.
- An alternate version of “Hurt Feelings” with Murray, Mel, Doug, Greg, and Jemaine describing slights.
- “Stay Cool,” a parody of West Side Story’s “Cool,” performed during the gang confrontation.
