The Tales of Uncle Remus: The Adventures of Brer Rabbit
The Tales of Uncle Remus: The Adventures of Brer Rabbit is a 1987 children’s book by Julius Lester with illustrations by Jerry Pinkney. It retells the classic Br’er Rabbit stories from American folklore in a modern but faithful way.
Reception:
- Publishers Weekly said the book is an important introduction to the Harris Br’er Rabbit tales and a funny collection of folktales. It also noted that some readers may still prefer the original versions, but Pinkney’s drawings—in both black-and-white and color—are lively and imaginative.
- School Library Journal praised Lester’s retellings as lively and fresh, with touches of modernity that fit naturally. It said Pinkney’s illustrations are engaging and humorous, even if they don’t copy the old A. B. Frost style exactly.
- The New York Times reviewer June Jordan called the writing beautifully done but felt the stories’ trickery and sometimes violent humor aren’t suited for all children. She described the revival as a misjudged project of considerable talent, while also praising Lester and Pinkney and hoping for future collaborations that are more worthy.
