Shilpi-Gautam Murder: A Patna Case Still Shrouded in Doubt

On July 3, 1999, two young people, Shilpi Jain and Gautam Singh, were found dead in a car on Fraser Road, Patna. They had been missing since July 2. The bodies were discovered in a semi-nude state, and the crime scene was not handled properly, leading to questions about how the case was investigated.

Shilpi was the daughter of a clothing store owner, and Gautam was the son of a London-based doctor. He was involved with the youth wing of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The two were believed to be in a relationship. The car they were found in belonged to Sadhu Yadav, a political figure who was the brother-in-law of Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Police initially ruled the deaths as a suicide, but this conclusion was widely questioned. There were inconsistencies in the investigation, such as the car being moved to the police station by a constable and the lack of fingerprint evidence from the scene. Later, investigators talked about possible poisoning.

The case drew heavy political attention. The state government handed the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI examined the evidence and sent Shilpi’s vaginal fluid for DNA testing, which suggested multiple rapes. The CBI asked for a DNA sample from an MLC (the suspected political figure, Sadhu Yadav), but he refused to provide it. Gautam’s family argued that the investigation was not fair.

After four years, the CBI closed the case, declaring it a suicide. The parents of Shilpi and many supporters rejected this finding and have continued to call for a reinvestigation, believing there was a cover-up related to political interference and possible sexual exploitation.

The case remains controversial, with ongoing appeals for another look at the evidence and unanswered questions. In a related development, Shilpi’s brother Prashant Jain was kidnapped outside his home and later released.
