PCMT1 is the human gene that makes the enzyme Protein-L-isoaspartate (D-aspartate) O-methyltransferase (PIMT). PIMT repairs damaged proteins by converting abnormal D-isoaspartyl and L-isoaspartyl residues back into the normal L-aspartyl form, helping to protect proteins from aging-related damage. The enzyme is a methyltransferase that uses S-adenosyl-L-methionine as the methyl donor in this repair process. PCMT1 belongs to a family of protein carboxyl methyltransferases and participates in protein methylation and repair. In humans, PCMT1 is located on chromosome 6 (6q25.1); the mouse equivalent is on chromosome 10. PCMT1 is widely expressed in many tissues, with notable expression in the brain and endothelial cells.
