The Sleeper is a two-part British crime drama television film from 2000. It was written by Gwyneth Hughes and directed by Stuart Orme, based on a novel by Gillian White. The story follows the Moon family, led by Violet (Eileen Atkins), whose son Fergus (Ciarán Hinds) and daughter-in-law Claire (Annabelle Apsion) want to sell the family farm, causing a bitter clash.

Part One takes place as the family gathers for one last Christmas at the farmhouse. A figure from Violet’s past arrives during a storm that knocks out the power, plunging the farm into darkness.

Part Two raises tension when Cath disappears, prompting a search led by Lillian and George. Claire also grows suspicious of Violet’s motives for bringing the family together.

Cast includes Eileen Atkins, Anna Massey, George Cole, Michelle Collins, Ciarán Hinds, Annabelle Apsion, Elizabeth Spriggs, Simon Chandler, Eric Byrne, and Julia Deakin. The film was part of BBC’s Christmas schedule and aired on BBC1 on December 26 and 27, 2000. It has a running time of about 60 minutes and was produced by BBC Worldwide.

The Sleeper was not released on VHS or DVD, but both parts are available to watch on YouTube. The program drew under 6.4 million viewers, placing it outside the week’s top 30 programs.
