NU.nl is a Dutch online daily newspaper. It writes its own news, has reporters in the field, and two full-time political editors in The Hague. The editor-in-chief is Lindsay Mossink, and the site is owned by DPG Media, a Belgian media group.

Founded in 1999, NU.nl was the first Dutch news site to publish news 24 hours a day. Its founders were Kees Zegers, Sacha Prins, Merien ten Houten and Robert Klep; Joost Boermans and Charlotte van Berne were its first editors. It started as a joint venture of Ilse Media Groep and Virtual Industries Online Marketing Solutions. In 2001 Sanoma bought NU.nl.

In 2002 Rogier Swagerman became editor-in-chief and the site began collecting photos from readers to share with news agencies. A mobile version appeared that year. In 2006 Swagerman was replaced by Laurens Verhagen.

In 2007 NU.nl added subpages: NUsport for sports and NUzakelijk for business. It began letting readers comment on news with NUjij and allowed amateur photographers on NUfoto. In 2008 NUkaart (a map feature) was added, followed by NU&toen and NUlive.

In 2009 a German version, dnews.de, was launched but canceled in 2011. NU.nl published a free printed newspaper to mark its 10th anniversary. In 2011 the site layout was updated to be easier to read on bigger screens, with major sections kept at the top.

Editor-in-chief Laurens Verhagen left in November 2011; Wouter Bax of Trouw became editor-in-chief in May 2012, and in July 2013 Gert-Jaap Hoekman took over.

From 2019 NU.nl prohibits denying climate change or criticizing climate policy, and such comments are removed. In 2022 the Raad voor de Journalistiek (Press Council) said NU.nl was not critical enough of the government during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In December 2019 DPG Media announced it would buy Sanoma’s Dutch activities (excluding Sanoma’s educational ventures). In April 2020 regulators approved the sale, and NU.nl merged into DPG Media.
